**Our Goal**

Our first goal for this math enrichment class project was to find how many 12 oz. cans of soda the families of the teachers and student's of Waikele Elementary school drink in a day, week, month, and a year. Besides how many, we also had to find the cost of the soda consumption. Our second goal was to learn to use the spreadsheet software to help us with our data collection. The students that were involved in this project were Renz, Brandon, Iris and Kevin.

The research process that we went through was to first find the price of a 12 ounce can of soda. Each student called three grocery stores for the price of a 12 pack of soda. We then divided each price by 12. The unit price was averaged, which came out to 31 cents per can.

We then collected data as to how many sodas are consumed by the families of our four classes in a 7-day period. We did this by asking our entire class to record how many sodas their families drank each day in a week.

Finally, all the data collected were added then
divided to get the average on how many sodas were consumed by each
family. Our answer came out to
**4 cans of soda per day for all families**
(Note only data from 3 classes are available.
Kevin's class didn't have enough data to be accurate).

Now that we have our family average of 4 cans of 12 oz. soda per day, we can finally work on our goal.

We asked each teacher to find out how many oldest and only child were in their class. This would give us the number of families we have at Waikele. Out of 23 classes, we came up with 464 families. We were not able to get the data from every class. We got all but 4 classes out of 27. So our data is not 100% accurate.

**Summary and Comments:**

We found out the families of teachers and students at Waikele Elementary School spend a lot of money buying 12 oz. canned sodas in a year! We also found out we can make a lot of money recycling the empty cans. But only if you don't mind the roaches and have a lot of space to store them.

The project was very hard and it took a lot of effort to do. It was frustrating but we learned a lot about Excel spreadsheet, collection of information and math. This project was worth doing.
